Ministry of Information and Civic Education Media Award Scheme - 25 September 2009

The Ministry of Information and Civic Education is implementing a Media Strategy project on HIV and AIDS with funding from the National Aids Commission (NAC). The aim of the project is to encourage journalists in Malawi to write more on HIV and AIDS. The project will run for one year, from January to December, 2009.

Parliament Press Gallery to undergo revival - 10th July 2009

National Assembly press gallery, which lacks essential facilities like telephones, computers, internet and workspace, will undergo a revival process, a parliament official confirmed recently. The press gallery currently accommodates less than twenty journalists. Parliament Spokesperson Mr. Ian Mwenye said parliament wishes to introduce computer and internet facilities for journalists.

We in MISA Malawi join the Media Council of Malawi in condemning Nyasa Times for publishing a malicious story insinuating that His Excellency the State President Dr Bingu wa Mutharika is ill. The story in our view is a violation the state president’s right to privacy as is enshrined in the Malawi Constitution. It is important for media practitioners to know that despite the existence of media freedoms, personal health care and medical treatment information are always under the control of the owner.

The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) condemns in its strongest terms a story that was published on the Nyasa Times website last Monday, 23rd March 2009 which alleged that the State President, HE, Dr Bingu wa Mutharika had been taken seriously ill and that he had cancelled events to launch the election campaign for his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) scheduled for Blantyre on Sunday, 22nd March, 2009 and Mangochi on Wednesday, 25th March, 2009.

'Accreditation exercise on track' - 07/04/09

The Media Council of Malawi (MCM), which is in the process of accrediting journalists and media practitioners, has said it has received an overwhelming response in the exercise. MCM executive director Baldwin Chiyamwaka said this in an interview recently. He said many journalists have already sent their forms.
