'Accreditation exercise on track'
The Media Council of Malawi (MCM), which is in the process of accrediting journalists and media practitioners, has said it has received an overwhelming response in the exercise. MCM executive director Baldwin Chiyamwaka said this in an interview recently. He said many journalists have already sent their forms.
"The forms are corning in our offices everyday and it just goes to shows that journalists and other media practitioners have welcomed the idea. Journalists want to be accredited," he said. He, however, said some journalists have not been forthcoming, but expressed optimism that the exercise will be a success.
"It is natural for people to be skeptical and others to be optimistic when a new project is being launched, but with time, those who are still in doubt will come, considering that all journalists and media practitioners in all the three regions in Malawi were consulted and most of them supported the Press Card and Accreditation Policy Scheme," he said. The accreditation exercise comes in the heels of continued cases of journalist imposters who hijack functions, pretending to work for certain media organisations, a thing that has disgraced the media industry.
